Steve Evans’ reaction to the autumn statement – December 2014

Clarkson Evans’ Managing Director Steve Evans has welcomed news that the Government is making it cheaper for employers to take on an apprentice by abolishing employer National Insurance contributions for apprentices aged under 25.

It is estimated that employers of around half a million apprentices will be exempt from paying employer National Insurance contributions. More importantly George Osborne’s announcement in his autumn statement could be the incentive that business leaders need to take on an apprentice for the first time.

“Anything that encourages Gloucestershire businesses to follow our lead and take on apprentices is great news for the local economy and the scores of young people keen to learn a skill while working,” said Steve Evans.

“Clarkson Evans is one of the biggest apprentice employers in the electrical industry, with positions available at all of our branches at various times of the year. Many of our places are in high demand so there’s a tough recruitment process but getting an apprenticeship with Clarkson Evans could be the start of a long-term successful career,” said Steve.

“There are huge long-term benefits for businesses prepared to take on an apprentice. Apprenticeships allow businesses to develop a committed workforce, trained to their own high standards and with specific skills that meet the needs of your company.

“Today’s apprentices have the potential to be your supervisors and managers of the future, they have the ability to understand your business inside out and can help to provide you with the competitive advantage required to survive in today’s tough economic environment,” added Steve.

Earlier this year Clarkson Evans was elated to be named as the winner of the VQ Employer of the Year Award 2014. Run by the Edge Foundation, a leading charity that supports practical learning, the awards are designed to celebrate vocational achievement.

“Not only do vocational qualifications like apprenticeships help the individual achieve their career goals, but they are also hugely beneficial to us as a business,” said Steve.

Clarkson Evans plans to reinvest the financial savings made by George Osborne’s announcement into improving further the training it provides to current apprentices as well as developing new marketing campaigns to recruit the best would-be apprentices to its business.
