A self-named ‘The Welsh Forrest Gump’ has begun a year-long challenge to raise money for a Welsh children’s charity.

Newport resident Scott Hayden is more than a quarter of the way into his 365 day challenge to run a minimum of a mile a day to raise money for Welsh Children’s Hospice, Tŷ Hafan.

Scott started the challenge on September 11 and is currently averaging 6.2 miles per day. “The one mile a day minimum is in place in case of injury, but I plan to run every mile I can for this fantastic charity,” said Scott, Area Manager for national electrical contractor Clarkson Evans in Cardiff.

Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities and offers care to life-limited children and support for their families throughout Wales.

Scott admits it has been challenging to run an average of 10k every day around his full-time work schedule.

“Running every day for a year is a big commitment with everything that life throws at you. But my family are supportive and understand the run comes first no matter what. Even on birthdays and at Christmas the run is the number one priority for the next year,” said the father-of-one.

Scott runs before or after work completing his daily challenge anywhere, from road running ‘around-the-block’ near his home, to the more challenging terrain of cross country.

“I think of the children the charity supports and the struggles they and their families face and that’s all the motivation I need,” added Scott.

The pro has been a member of the local Lliswerry Running Club for three years and regularly takes part in trial runs.

“I discovered running out of the blue three years ago. I had never run before but got up one morning and thought I’d give it a go and haven’t looked back since.”

In fact, Scott is such a keen runner he has already completed two full marathons this year and has two lined up for 2017.

Scott has raised almost £851 of his £3650 target. If you would like to make a donation please click here.
