Clarkson Evans supports new Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Ambassador Scheme

Clarkson Evans is a founding supporter of a new apprenticeship ambassador scheme in Oxfordshire designed to help young people and their families and employers understand the benefits of apprenticeships.

New Apprentice Ambassador Luke Mullan, who works out of our Kidlington branch, will join other apprentices from Oxfordshire in raising awareness of apprenticeships through a number of events and initiatives across the county.

He will attend events such as careers fairs, school assemblies and employer briefings to tell his story and share what he has learned, giving people the opportunity to hear real life success stories first-hand, ask questions and talk openly about what it’s like to be an apprentice.

All the Apprenticeship Ambassadors will benefit from the chance to develop their presentation and networking skills, as well as representing their employer and raising awareness of opportunities available locally.

Luke thought the prison service would give him a secure future career when he discovered sixth form wasn’t for him. However after several years of working at HMP Bullingdon, Aylesbury and Grendon, he was keen to free himself from a job with limited potential and gain a recognised industry qualification.

With qualified electricians earning around 25 per cent above the national average wage Luke was prepared to start “on the tools” as an apprentice with Clarkson Evans.

Since starting at the company Luke admits to learning a lot about himself as well as what it takes to become a qualified electrician.

“I expected to learn how to use the tools of the trade but my apprenticeship has taught me much more than the practical skills required to become an electrician. I am now more organised, value the importance of working as part of a team and I’m much more proficient at prioritising my work,” said Luke, a former student at the Blessed George Napier School in Banbury.

“For one day each week I receive theory training at one of their in-house centres and for the other four days of the week I’m out on new housing sites, learning on-the-job under the guidance of my team leader. Not a day goes by without me learning something new,” added 24-year-old Luke.

Luke is hoping to qualify at the end of 2015 and already has his sights set on becoming a team leader with the company.

And his advice to would-be apprentices: “Think beyond the apprenticeship wage and see the long-term earning potential that an apprenticeship may provide. Seize every opportunity you are given and work hard – you will soon reap the rewards of your efforts.”
